The Mohua, also known as the Yellowhead, is a small bird with a bright yellow head and breast. Early settlers called it the ‘bush canary’ because of its lovely song and striking color.
The Mohua survives in isolated populations in South Island and Stewart Island beech forests, feeding primarily on insects. Once common, their numbers have plummeted drastically due to the introduction of rats and stoats. Now, fewer than 5,000 Mohua remain, and they've disappeared from 75% of their original range. Their vulnerability is heightened by their nesting habits—they nest in tree holes, making them easy targets during predator surges, especially after beech mast years.
Mohua are now ranked as Endangered on the Red List of Threatened Species.
