The South Island Kōkako was a distinct New Zealand bird with dark plumage and orange facial wattles. In the early 1800s, it lived in beech forests and low scrub across the Southern Alps, Stewart Island, and parts of Otago and Southland. After the introduction of predators, its numbers rapidly declined, and by the late 1800s, it was extremely rare. The last confirmed sighting was in 1967, and it was declared extinct in 2008, though a potential sighting in 2007 led to its reclassification as data deficient in 2013.
