The North Island Kōkako is a striking bird native to New Zealand, notable for its blue-gray plumage and vivid blue facial wattles. Historically, it inhabited dense forests across the North Island, from Northland to the central regions. The introduction of predators such as rats, stoats, and cats led to a significant decline in its population. By the late 1900s, the North Island Kōkako had become very rare, with surviving populations now primarily in protected forest areas.
