The Pohutukawa, or Metrosideros excelsa, is a renowned native tree of New Zealand, often called the "New Zealand Christmas Tree" due to its vibrant red flowers that bloom in summer, around Christmas time. Known for its striking display of fiery red blossoms and glossy, dark green leaves, the Pohutukawa adds a spectacular splash of color to coastal landscapes.
This evergreen tree thrives in coastal environments, often growing on cliffs and sandy soils, where its sprawling branches create a dramatic silhouette against the sky. Its dense foliage provides shelter and food for various native birds, including the Tui and the Kererū.
