The Pūteketeke (Great Crested Grebe) is a large, graceful water bird native to New Zealand, renowned for its distinctive black crest and striking white neck. Found in lakes, rivers, and wetlands across the country, this bird is often seen diving for fish, its primary food source. During the breeding season, the Pūteketeke displays an impressive courtship ritual, where pairs engage in synchronized movements, including mutual head-bobbing and offering reeds to each other. The black crest on their heads becomes more prominent, adding to their dramatic appearance. The Pūteketeke is a symbol of the rich biodiversity of New Zealand's freshwater environments and is appreciated for its elegance and grace both in and out of the water.
