Meet the Tūī, one of New Zealand's most iconic birds! Endemic to our beautiful islands, these feathered wonders are part of the unique honeyeater family, thriving on the nectar of our native flora. Did you know Tūī boast distinct regional accents and can mimic the calls of every forest bird? Yes, they can even talk! Check out this charming video of a talking Tūī https://youtu.be/TqF33vc_q68?si=o0RtJuW3PasBDweD – it's sure to bring a smile to your day.
As avid pollinators, Tūī play a crucial role in the lifecycle of native trees like Kōwhai, Rewarewa, Kahikatea, Pohutukawa, Rātā, and Flax. Thanks to effective predator control efforts, Tūī populations have soared, benefiting from programs targeting possums, rats, and mustelids, their primary nest predators.
I'm currently cultivating Kahikatea and Kowhai on my land to create a haven for these beautiful creatures – and you can too! Plus, don’t miss out on the opportunity to purchase Kahikatea seedlings available on my website and TradeMe! https://www.meenanzcraft.co.nz/collections/seedlings
Here's a glimpse of a Tūī enjoying feeding on Flax in my garden. Notice how the Tūī's fine feathers above the bill become coated with yellow pollen as it reaches the nectar in a flax flower, playing a vital role in pollination.
